Liverpool could yet offer Newcastle United some shock help this summer
Liverpool and Newcastle United have been two of the leaders of the transfer rumour mill in recent weeks. Both see their summer dealings as far from done just yet.
In the meantime, Liverpool could help Newcastle solve another conundrum with a surprising transfer move which would certainly leave eyebrows raised.
Liverpool target shock move for Nathan Collins
According to reports by GiveMeSport, Liverpool are considering a surprise move for Brentford centre-back Nathan Collins. The Republic of Ireland international has been a reliable performer in two years with the Bees and the club insist he is not for sale, though that has not deterred the likes of Wissa from demanding an exit in recent weeks.
Brentford signed Collins for £23 million from Wolves in 2023 and the likelihood is it would cost substantially more to get the 24-year-old out of west London. But the Reds are reported to admiring the defender and may continue to monitor him if a deal is not possible this summer. No approach has yet been made and Brentford ‘are not engaging’ in conversations regarding a move for another of their key players.
Collins has four years remaining on his contract and there are no indications the player is pushing for a move, having just been named Brentford club captain following the departure of Christian Norgaard. The 30-cap Irish international played every single minute in the Premier League last season, registering an impressive two goals and five assists from centre-back and earning an average match rating of 6.93.
Liverpool Collins move could open Newcastle doors
If Liverpool were to actively engage in a pursuit to complete the signing of Collins, that could open the doors for Newcastle to secure a key defensive acquisition of their own. Marc Guehi has previously been a top Newcastle target and they could return for the England international, report The Times.
Crystal Palace captain Guehi is also firmly on the radar of the Reds, but both clubs have reportedly been put off by Palace’s £50m asking price for a player in the final year of his contract. The Times report that the Magpies are aiming to negotiate down a fee for the 25-year-old to around £40m.
Following rejected bids for 21-year-old Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, Newcastle could return for Guehi, for whom they saw three bids rejected last summer. The Magpies will hope that the offer of Champions League football could aid their cause, as Eddie Howe prepares his squad for a second stab at the competition and will hope for a strong squad at his disposal come the end of the transfer window.
