Joao Gomes may have just dropped new Wolves captain hint as footage from Girona emerges

Any day now, Vitor Pereira could confirm who the new captain of Wolves will be – but Joao Gomes may have already dropped a hint.

With Nelson Semedo confirming his exit from Wolves last week, Pereira now has a decision to make.

Wolves have had to name a new skipper quite often in recent times, and the hope is that the next skipper will actually hold the position for longer than one season.

During pre-season, a few players have worn the armband so far.

Toti Gomes and Matt Doherty have worn it, and against Girona, goalkeeper Jose Sa got the chance to showcase his leadership credentials.

Perhaps, then, it’s between those three – and Joao Gomes may have hinted who’ll be getting the nod.

Currently the squad are in Girona for the second phase of their pre-season.

They played against Girona on Saturday, and will return to England to play one more game against Celta Vigo this weekend.

One would imagine that whoever is going to be captain moving forward will wear the armband in that game.

So all eyes will be on the team sheet – and one wonders if it will be Toti.

That’s because Wolves released some footage earlier today from their Girona camp of Joao Gomes going around his teammates filming them with a camera.

And interestingly, he greets Toti as ‘my captain’.

Either the decision has been made that Toti will lead the team, or Gomes simply sees him as a leader figure.

We will find out in due course who Pereira will choose, but Toti seems to be the clear favourite to be Wolves’ next captain.

He has spent the most time with the armband in pre-season, and he does feel a good fit for a couple of reasons.

While there aren’t really any obvious choices, Toti is someone who is respected in that dressing room, and he’s also likely going to play every game given how well suited he is to the system.

Matt Doherty has done well on the right side, but could potentially be displaced later down the line by Yerson Mosquera.

Sa has shown that he can be rash and emotional, whereas Toti has always seemed pretty level-headed.

And lastly Toti is humble and hardworking – two qualities that all his teammates are bound to really like.
