WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham Has Interesting Response to Pro Wrestling Offer From WOW

Women of Wrestling part-owner and Los Angeles Lakers governor, Jeanie Buss, surprised many when she publicly stated her interest in having Sophie Cunningham compete in a wrestling ring. Well, it seems the Indiana Fever star is open to the idea.

After a solid career in Phoenix with the Mercury, Cunningham has seen her profile increase this year as she has done something many of her Fever teammates didn’t in 2024. She has backed up top star Caitlin Clark and is willing to be her personal enforcer.

While her extra physicality on the court on behalf of Clark has garnered mixed opinions, she has a fan in Lakers governor Jeannie Buss. The former NBA team owner also has an ownership stake in all-women’s wrestling promotion WOW.

During a press event at San Diego Comic Con last week to promote the brand, Buss was asked if she had any interest in seeing Cunningham in a WOW ring. And she, as well as fellow owner David McLane, let it be known they would love to see it happen.

Well, the comments got back to Cunningham. When asked about her interest level in a potential jump into a wrestling ring, the WNBA star certainly did not say no.

Sophie Cunningham stats: 8.0 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 0.9 APG, 1.0 SPG, 42% 3PT

“I thought that tweet was pretty funny. I don’t know what will happen with that. I’m still just kind of focused on basketball. But it is kind of cool,” Cunningham told journalist Landon Buford. “I’ve been a lifelong WWE fan for a really long time. Ever since we were little. So, I think it would be something kind of fun to get into.”

Sophie Cunningham On Potential Dream Opponent, Who She Would Want To Tag W In @WWE Or @AEW:

"Man, I have no idea! I thought that tweet was pretty funny. I don’t know what will come of it," says @sophaller.

The comments were on the idea of being in a tag match in WWE or AEW. Nevertheless, she did not rule out the idea of competing in a wrestling ring. It is unclear if WWE or AEW would have any interest in bringing the 28-year-old for a match. But Women of Wrestling certainly do, and the Jeanie Buss connection could play a big role in making a match happen.

WOW shows can currently be found on Roku, Vice TV, and Pluto TV.
