Rodrigo Gomes discloses how he really feels about playing wing-back at Wolves

Rodrigo Gomes sat down for an interview at pre-season camp, discussing his first year in the Premier League, his future ambitions, and what position he is most comfortable in.

There has been lots of talk around Rodrigo Gomes’ best position since he joined the club last summer.

Gomes attracted interest from Porto earlier this summer, but Wolves were adamant about keeping the 22-year-old, who they see as a player for the future.

Gomes starred for Portugal in the U21 Euros in June, getting amongst the goals and showing the same attacking threat that bagged him seven goals and seven assists in his final season in the Primeira Liga.

But in his debut season at Wolves, he was deployed in numerous positions, raising the question of where he is most effective.

Rodrigo Gomes thinks wing-back is his best position at Wolves

In an interview posted to Wolves YouTube account, Gomes was asked what his best position is, to which he replied: “I think the position I’m doing now, the wingback, I think is a good position for me.

I think i have the capacity to do that position.”

“I need to increase my levels. I know I need to increase my defensive levels, my attacking levels, always I need to improve but I think it’s a very good position for me.”

Gomes looks at the wing-back position as two-way. He recognises the need for defensive solidity, but equally values the attacking side of the game.

Gomes previously stated his need for more goals and assists next season, and in this interview, he makes it clear that he’s open to more responsibility in attack: “But if Vitor wants me to be more up front, I play.”

The future is Wolves for Rodrigo Gomes

Fans will be delighted at how the young Portuguese player talks about Wolves and his future.

He says: “It’s a dream to be here. I’m very happy to be here and I’m trying to increase my level to play here for many years.”

After just one season, Gomes is already admired at the club, and you can see from his temperament in interviews that he is a team-player and will do whatever is asked of him by Vitor Pereira.

As the new campaign approaches, it will be interesting to see if his wishes for an attacking wing-back role are granted. It’s an exciting prospect to watch him develop further this season.
