San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs inked De’Aaron Fox to a four-year, $229 million extension on Monday, which came as no surprise. By trading Tre Jones, Zach Collins, Sidy Cissoko, and three first-round picks for the All-Star point guard, the Spurs made it clear that they see him as a centerpiece of their future success.
Of course, some fans were vocal about the fact that the Spurs already have two young point guards lying in wait, although there is no guarantee that Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper will ever be better than Fox is now.
By ensuring Fox remains in San Antonio, the Spurs have successfully conveyed to the rest of the league that Victor Wembanyama’s title window is officially open. While Harper or Castle might eventually be better than Fox, waiting around for youngsters to develop when Wembanyama is already one of the best players in the league seems like a waste.
While the Spurs may have overpaid for a player of Fox’s caliber, they did not give him a player option in the final year, which has become more common. Basically, when his contract is up, it’s up. The Spurs can sign him to another extension in 2028, although if Harper or Castle break out, the Spurs can easily end their relationship with Fox, either by trading him or by simply letting him walk when the deal is up.
With no “will he opt in” drama on the horizon, the Spurs did retain some future control over their star player, although it’s expected that it will be smooth sailing, and Fox and Wemby will find success before the rest of the young core even begins to find their stride as bona fide NBA players.
