Celtics trade shooting big for rookie in cap-clearing move

Boston Celtics are sending veteran stretch big Georges Niang and two future second-round picks to the Utah Jazz in exchange for rookie RJ Luis Jr.

The Boston Celtics have made another move to manage their cap sheet while retooling the roster.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics are trading forward Georges Niang and two future second-round picks to the Utah Jazz in exchange for rookie RJ Luis Jr.

Niang, 32, returns to Utah, where he played from 2016 to 2021. His $8.8 million salary fits into the Jazz’s John Collins trade exception, giving Utah a solid veteran shooter along with two future draft assets.

Last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Niang averaged 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.

He shot 46.1% from the field and an impressive 40.6% from three-point range — a key reason he remains valuable in today’s spacing-focused game.
