59 goals in 23 games, the insane Benjamin Sesko season which first alerted Man Utd to his talents

Manchester United have finally made a move for Benjamin Sesko, and it’s one that makes it clear they’re not fooling around with this chase.

Man Utd have submitted a £73m offer for Benjamin Sesko after Newcastle launched an improved bid for the player, having seen their first offer rejected.

Since Man Utd made their stance clear from the beginning – they would bid only if the player wanted to join them – the optimism is high.

They can finally do the deal they wanted to do many years ago, having followed Benjamin Sesko’s rise from a prolific goalscorer in his home country to the blockbuster prospect he is today.

Benjamin Sesko announced himself in 2017/18

Sesko is just 22 years old, so the fact that he announced himself nearly eight years earlier says it all about how he has been destined for the top since the beginning of his career.

Sesko was at NK Krsko at the time, a club who are in the Slovenian Second Division, and he was a big part of their U15 squad.

The rangy striker, who had a physical advantage at the time as well, rewrote goalscoring records in Slovenia’s youth system during 2017/18.

Sesko finished that season with an astonishing 59 goals in 23 games, tearing apart the Slovenian youth system with his combination of pace, power, and finishing.

By the end of that season, the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona, and Dortmund were interested, just to name a few.

United were alerted to his talents at the same time as well, and before he left Krsko to enter Red Bull’s system at Salzburg via Liefering, they bid £1m for him.

Salzburg offered around £1.7m at the time, and Sesko was set on his path to follow the player he’s been compared to – Erling Haaland.

United maintained an interest in Sesko in the years after that move as well, as the striker went from strength to strength.

Nearly eight years on from that failed bid, United are hoping to land him for nearly 74 times that amount, but one they’ll hope is worth every penny.

Sesko would spearhead a charged Man Utd attack

Due to Sesko’s age, and the fact that he hasn’t lit up the Bundesliga quite like Haaland did, there are valid questions over his fee and suitability to be United’s first-choice striker.

However, the Rasmus Hojlund comparisons fall a bit flat because the Danish striker joined a club in a state of change, and that change only increased in intensity after he came on.

He had much less top-five league experience when he arrived, and there weren’t many leaders in the team who could take the pressure off him, both on and off the pitch.

Sesko comes into a stable environment, at a club that is looking like it’s on the way back up.

He will work under a manager who has a clear playing style, and has a reputation for being a striker whisperer, considering Viktor Gyokeres’ record under him at Sporting.

If Sesko makes good on the potential he showed in 2017/18, and he has threatened to truly break out since as well, then this fee would look small in a few years.

It’s an all-in gamble, but one where the potential reward is so tantalising that the risk has been deemed worth it.
