Star Steelers linebacker’s injury could keep him out for ‘days,’ Mike Tomlin says

LATROBE, Pa. --Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith has a groin injury that could keep him out for a number of days, head coach Mike Tomlin said.

Tomlin noted he had no specific length of time for the injury, but that it would be an issue that would keep him out for more than a few days.

It is a potentially concerning update with Highsmith suffering a groin injury twice last year, once during training camp and another during the season, which forced him to miss three games.

The Steelers had a rash of soft tissue injuries in 2024 that forced multiple players to miss significant time, including Highsmith, who still rounded into a productive year despite missing time with that groin injury as well as an ankle injury.

The Steelers have depth behind Highsmith, including Herbig and newly drafted fourth-round pick Jack Sawyer, who is oft a hot start at training camp. While Highsmith is likely to miss time, the injury is unlikely to affect his regular season availability.

Highsmith has a history of groin injuries, but has only missed four total games over his career with the issues. His first groin issue popped up in 2021, with another one in 2023 that he played through.
