Liverpool sell young gun amid $310m transfer demand

Liverpool sent homegrown midfielder Tyler Morton to French club Lyon for a transfer fee of up to $27 million on Wednesday (AEST).

The 22-year-old Morton signed a five-year contract with Lyon, who confirmed they paid a fee of $18m with potential bonuses of $9m.

Morton, who joined Liverpool's youth system at age 7, made only five appearances last season for the Premier League champions.

His first-team debut came in 2021 before loans to Blackburn and Hull.

Morton helped England win the under-21 European Championship last month.

Lyon had been relegated because of financial problems but the club won their appeal and will remain in Ligue 1 next season.

Liverpool has been a big spender this summer - the recent signing of Hugo Ekitike took its outlay to around $528m.

Liverpool will receive a reported $134m from Bayern Munich for winger Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah's move to Bayer Leverkusen will bring the Reds up to $72m.

Taking in some fees will be helpful for financial sustainability rules - as well as add to the club's war chest in pursuit of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

Liverpool have already had a monster bid of $225m, plus add-ons, rejected by Newcastle, who are reportedly demanding $310m for the Swedish striker.

Isak was the second leading goal scorer in the Premier League last season with 23 - behind Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (29).

The lanky 25-year-old returned to Newcastle training on Tuesday (AEST) after getting a blast from former England star Shaun Wright-Phillips.

"Have a little bit of respect for your teammates, turn up to train, and then go home," Wright-Phillips said.

"You want to play football at the end of the day, and the fans have been unbelievable for him. I feel like he should have just showed up.

"Everyone's been in a position in football where they don't want to be somewhere. But there's only some who don't show up for training.

"He's obviously been advised to do that because the person I've seen talk and be around in Newcastle doesn't seem like that's in his character.

"And we're seeing little bits of Isak now, the way he's handling this by not turning up to training."

Liverpool are taking on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Monday (12am kick off AEST).

The match is an annual preseason contest between the Premier League champions and FA Cup holders.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said captain Virgil van Dijk should be fit for the fixture but Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley were in doubt with their injuries.

Stan Sport, Australia's home of football, will have live and exclusive coverage from Sunday 11.50pm AEST.
