All eight of Liverpool’s summer signings were in action on Monday as the Reds hosted Athletic Bilbao at Anfield. Goalkeepers Freddie Woodman and Armin Pecsi both completed 45 minutes apiece in the first of two matches between the two sides as Arne Slot’s men ran out 4-1 winners.
Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili then all started the second meeting with the La Liga outfit, with Will Wright later introduced as substitute after only being unveiled after joining from Salford City earlier in the day.
Liverpool has committed to spending roughly £295m so far this summer. And Cody Gakpo has admitted he hopes the Reds bolster their squad further before the end of the transfer window on September 1.
“That’s not up to me, you know,” he told Sky Sports when asked if he thought Liverpool still needed further reinforcements. “If the club brings new players in, that’s good.
“I think, to bring in even more quality is always good for the competition and also for the squad depth.
“But yeah, it’s not up to me. We will see what will happen.”
Liverpool could easily end up smashing the £400m barrier as they continue to be linked with further signings in both their attack and at centre-back.
While they currently do not intend to submit a second bid for Alexander Isak as things stand, after Newcastle United knocked back their first offer of £110m, their interest in the wantaway Swede is well-documented.
The striker has made it clear that he wishes to leave St. James’ Park, and the Reds are his destination of choice.
But even if Liverpool do not sign Isak, they could still find themselves in the market for a new forward following the departure of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich in a £65.5m deal.
Beyond the Colombian, the likes of Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak all continue to be linked with Anfield exits.
Meanwhile, the Reds are also weighing up their centre-back options, with Marc Guehi one player of interest following Jarell Quansah’s £35m departure to Bayer Leverkusen.
