Manchester United are plotting a move to try and sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

United’s strategy this summer has been to sign proven Premier League players, like Mbeumo and Cunha, and so there is an argument to suggest that Ruben Amorim should do the same thing with the striker position rather than adding Sesko.

Man United should sign Jean-Philippe Mateta

In terms of Premier League strikers that have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, one such name is Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was one of the best pure target-men strikers in the Premier League last season.

Previous reports have said that Mateta could cost around £45m this summer, after a season where he scored 17 goals in 46 games for Oliver Glasner’s side, and that includes a spell of the season where he was out with a head injury. The 28-year-old is dangerous in the air, fast, and strong, and could be exactly what United needs.

Having added Cunha and Mbeumo, United should be able to create more chances and provide excellent service to a number nine. Mateta would excel in simply being able to put the ball in the back of the net, which is all that United need in a new number nine.

He has already shown that he can deliver in the Premier League, scoring 38 league goals in his time at Crystal Palace, and would provide less of a risk than Sesko, something that, based on United’s financial situation, they can’t afford to get wrong.

Which other Premier League strikers could United sign?

Watkins again fits the mould of a proven Premier League player, as last season, he scored 16 goals in 38 games in the league. Villa likely don’t want to sell Watkins either, as they already sold their other striker, Jhon Duran, in the January transfer window.

Other than Watkins, Man United have also been linked to signing Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who could have a reduced role for the Blues this season as they added both Liam Delap, and Joao Pedro to help score goals. However, Chelsea have placed an £80m price tag on Jackson, which could be enough to put United off signing him.

So that takes us back to Mateta, who is one, more affordable, and two a more realistic addition compared to Jackson and Watkins.
