Manchester United are eyeing a deal for Benjamin Sesko but face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United
Despite finishing 15th in the Premier League and with no European football on offer, Manchester United’s summer transfer window is going better than many will have expected.
Deals have been struck to sign Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from Wolves and Brentford, respectively, despite several Premier League rivals expressing interest in the pair. Both men have Premier League experience and scored 35 goals between them in the top flight last term.
The Red Devils remain among the biggest clubs in world despite a patchy campaign last time out. Now they are eyeing a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko as Ruben Amorim looks to further improve his attacking options at Old Trafford.
Man Utd have reached verbal agreement with Benjamin Sesko
According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the Red Devils have struck a verbal agreement with Benjamin Sesko on personal terms. However, Newcastle are said to have done the same.
He said on X: “Understand Benjamin Sesko and his camp have reached full verbal agreements with both Manchester United and Newcastle over a long-term contract. Final details were settled yesterday.
“It now mainly depends on which club also reaches an agreement with RB Leipzig. Man United are offering €85 million, Newcastle €90 million. Decisive hours ahead.”
Despite agreements being reached with both clubs, Ben Jacobs has reported that Sesko wants to make the move to Old Trafford. He said: “Understand Benjamin Sesko has made it clear this evening he wants to join Manchester United. Newcastle have today offered improved terms and their bid to Leipzig remains the stronger of the two clubs.
“But there is now a growing sense of confidence within Manchester United that Sesko will join if the clubs reach an deal. Manchester United's focus is now on trying to reach an agreement with Leipzig as the club believe Sesko is waiting for them.”
Benjamin Sesko adds greater goal threat to give cutting edge to Man Utd attack
One of United’s biggest issues in the Premier League last season was a lack of goals. Of the 17 teams who survived in the top flight, only Everton scored fewer times than Ruben Amorim’s side.
The club have gone some way to addressing those issues with the additions of Mbeumo and Cunha. Sesko scored 13 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances last term while he scored a further eight times in the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League.
While Cunha and Mbeumo showed their eye for goal last term, they will also be able to provide service to Sesko - if a move to Old Trafford can be completed. United do have limited funds this summer, so the focus will need to quickly shift to player sales if they can reach an agreement with Leipzig for the player.
