£30m "superstar" is now "waiting for Chelsea"; he'd be their best deal since Palmer - opinion

Over the last four years, Chelsea have signed 49 players, with Jorrel Hato being the most recent.

It would be fair to say that over that time the club have had a few more misses than hits, but one thing is sure: Cole Palmer's been the club's best acquisition.

The former Manchester City gem joined the West Londoners for around £42.5m in the summer of 2023, and since then, he's racked up 43 goals and 29 assists in 97 appearances.

While the club are unlikely to sign anyone quite that impactful this summer, it does look like they could land someone who could be their best deal since Palmer.

Chelsea target their best deal since Palmer

As it is every year, this summer has been a busy one for Chelsea.

On top of the hugely promising Hato, the Blues have also secured the services of the seriously exciting Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap, all while they continue to be linked with Xavi Simons.

However, that's not all, as it now looks like the West Londoners will be getting their hands on another brilliant young talent, someone who could end up being the best deal the club has had since Palmer in 2023.

Palmer Rogers

At least that is according to a recent report from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, who has reaffirmed that Chelsea are very interested in Alejandro Garnacho.

In fact, the Italian journalist has revealed that, even though other clubs have made it clear they want to sign the Argentine, he's made it clear he wants to go to Stamford Bridge, and is "waiting for Chelsea."

Interestingly, this clear desire to join the club could really pay off for the Pensioners, as it gives them far more leverage in talks, and according to a report from the Independent, they do not value him at more than £30m.

It might not be a transfer everyone is on board with at the moment, but there is a chance Garnach could be Chelsea's best deal since Palmer.

Why Garnacho could be Chelsea's best deal since Palmer

Okay, the first thing to clear up right away is that we are not claiming that Garnacho will be as good as Palmer for Chelsea next season, as that would be placing far too much pressure on the young attacker.

Still, he could end up being the best deal the club have got in the market since the Englishman, and the first reason is the signings they've made since.

For example, while they had the potential to be useful players for the squad, the likes of João Félix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jadon Sancho all failed to establish themselves, with the first two being sold on and the United ace being sent back to Old Trafford.

Likewise, while Pedro Neto has become an important member of the first team, the fact that he cost a whopping £54m meant that he was expected to.

Moreover, with a tally of nine goals and nine assists in 51 games, it would be hard to say that he exceeded expectations or was a particularly brilliant deal.

For comparison's sake, the 21-year-old Argentine was able to score 11 goals and provide ten assists in 58 appearances, totalling 3,568 minutes for the Red Devils.

That means the dynamic international maintained an average of a goal involvement every 2.76 games, or more impressively, every 169.90 minutes for what was a historically bad United side.

Now, if the Madrid-born gem was able to produce numbers like that in such a truly dreadful team, then it wouldn't be unrealistic to assume he'd be even more effective in a side on an upwards trajectory, such as the Blues.

In fact, with Maresca coaching him and better players around him, there is no reason he couldn't become the "superstar" journalist Liam Canning believes him to be.

When you then also take into account that he might be available for a fee as low as £30m, it's easy to see a world in which he becomes the best deal the Blues have had in the market since Palmer.

Ultimately, Garnacho might still be a player who divides opinion, but the talent is clearly there, and if the price is as low as we've been told it could be, this transfer seems like a no-brainer for Chelsea.
