West Ham want to sign Raheem Sterling this summer, but a deal won’t come cheap.

Graham Potter could be reunited with Sterling after coaching him at Chelsea during the 2022/23 season.

Both have since moved on to two different sides of London. However, Sterling could now trade Stamford Bridge for the London Stadium.

The Hammers have always tried to keep their wage structure to a minimum, but the total cost of Sterling’s transfer could tip them over the edge.

The Blues are hoping to recoup £20million for Sterling, who cost them £47.5m three years ago, [The Sun].

However, that looks difficult with only a Saudi club likely to pay his huge wages. According to Capology (5 August), Sterling currently earns £325,000 per week at Chelsea. This totals £16.9m yearly, and he is set to earn £33.8m before his contract runs out in 2027.

There is massive doubt about whether the Englishman would be willing to concede his wages to remain in the Premier League. If not, his transfer could cost the Hammers up to £70.7m in transfer fees and wages, assuming he signs a three-year deal.

With his current wage more than double Lucas Paqueta, who is the current highest earner at West Ham on £150,000 weekly, the Hammers could give up their pursuit of Sterling altogether.

Sterling’s loan move to Arsenal was a disappointment

Sterling is a gamble that West Ham should not take

The Hammers should seek alternatives to Sterling if they wish to have a more competitive season.

While the Englishman lit up the Premier League during his Manchester City days, the past couple of seasons have been a dramatic fall from grace. From unconvincing performances to being left unused on the bench, Sterling could be well past his prime.

He could have been a good rotational option for Potter. But for over £300,000 per week in wages, West Ham would be better off buying two decent players elsewhere. Therefore, Sterling to the London Stadium is a gamble which should not be taken.
