A retired rugby league player who counts Hull KR, Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants among his former clubs is set for a ‘gruelling’ charity fundraiser.
Shaun Lunt will cycle 400 miles from Washington DC to Central park in New York City in support of Rugby League Cares with all money raised going to the sport’s leading charity.
Lunt last played in Super League in 2019 with the hooker making the switch from Hull KR to Leeds Rhinos in a deal that saw Matt Parcell head the other way.
That would be Lunt’s final season but also his second stint with Leeds, having joined the Rhinos on loan in 2012 as well, midway through his six-year spell with Huddersfield Giants.
It is with the Giants where he spent the majority of his career, playing over 100 times for the club but the Cumbrian-born star now has a new challenge, a lengthy bike ride in America next month.

The 400-mile ride will take place over six days, starting on September 7th and ending in Central Park in New York on the 12th of the month.
All funds raised will go to Rugby League Cares, the sport’s leading charity, and Lunt’s Just Giving page has provided more information on the bike ride and the work that RL Cares does.

“It’s the US road trip of a lifetime – and I’d love your support,” Lunt’s fundraising page explains,
“From September 7-12 2025 I’ll be cycling 400 gruelling miles from Washington DC to Central Park in New York City to support a fantastic cause, Rugby League Cares.
“RL Cares is the sport’s official charity and it impacts on people across our communities in so many ways, from providing wellbeing and welfare support to current players, careers guidance to recently retired players and help and advice on brain health, dementia and other conditions to retired players of all ages.
“RL Cares also delivers life changing and life-affirming health programmes to young players and their coaches though its partnership with Movember and to the wider public via the Offload programme.
“You can help me show appreciation for this great charity by sponsoring me on the ride – all donations, big and small, are welcome. Thank you!”
The £2,000 target has already been smashed at the time of writing and information on how to donate can be found here.
Lunt isn’t the first rugby league personality to fundraise this year via a bike ride with Leigh Leopards’ owner Derek Beaumont embarking on a ride in Ireland to raise funds for Candelighters, a charity supporting the families of those with cancer.
