Man United ace could retire at Old Trafford as transfer approaches are 'rejected'

Manchester United are reportedly considering handing Harry Maguire a contract which would see the experienced centre-back finish his career at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old made the move to the Red Devils from Leicester City in 2019, and he has represented the 20-time English champions on 246 appearances in all competitions.

Last season, Maguire made 40 appearances for Man United, with the England international proving to be an important player for head coach Ruben Amorim, and he signed a contract extension at Old Trafford in January.

Maguire's deal is due to run until June 2026, but according to the Daily Mail, he could be handed a deal which would see him finish his career at Man United.

The report claims that the Red Devils have turned down approaches from clubs in the Premier League and Italy for Maguire, who has no interest in leaving the English giants.

Man United 'turn down' approaches for Maguire

There has allegedly not yet been any discussions over a new deal, but Man United have communicated that they are keen to keep hold of the defender.

Monaco and Marseille are also said to be among Maguire's suitors, and clubs outside of England would be able to discuss a pre-contract with the experienced defender at the end of December.

Maguire lost the Man United captaincy in 2023 and had been close to joining West Ham United during a difficult period in his career, but the Englishman has turned around his fortunes at Old Trafford.

Will Maguire be a starter for Man United next season?

Maguire has a battle on his hands to be a starter for Man United during the 2025-26 campaign due to the competition for spots at the back, with Amorim having a number of options.

Leny Yoro is a guaranteed starter, with the 19-year-old having an outstanding pre-season, and he is developing into one of the club's most important players.

Matthijs de Ligt, Luke Shaw, Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven and the returning Lisandro Martinez are also centre-back options alongside Maguire, so Amorim has some big decisions on his hands.

Man United will also play fewer matches this season due to the club's absence from Europe, which will place more importance on the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Maguire remains an important figure at Old Trafford, though, and he is now part of the six-man leadership group under Amorim.
