The Reds’ pursuit of Alexander Isak is closely tied to Newcastle’s ability to land a replacement forward – Sesko sits at the top of Eddie Howe’s wish list.
Unless Leipzig’s striker moves to Tyneside, Newcastle are expected to resist sanctioning Isak’s sale, even for a substantial fee.
Everything hinges on the outcome of Sesko’s next move.
If Newcastle win the race, the Magpies can swiftly move to approve Isak’s transfer, finally opening the door for Liverpool to sign their marquee striker after months of courting.
In this way, Sesko’s switch could trigger the domino effect.
However, that does not look like it will happen.
The Athletic have reported that the Slovenian international has chosen Manchester United:
“Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.”
“Newcastle have continued working to secure the transfer and on Tuesday a bid of €82.5m plus €2.5m was accepted by Leipzig.”
“But Sesko wants to join Manchester United and all parties are now aware of that, as talks advance in an effort to satisfy Leipzig’s expectations.”
“While there is no club-to-club agreement yet, the situation is moving in that direction.”
It’s not the kind of news that Reds fans will want to hear regarding the situation.
Meanwhile, for Newcastle, Sesko’s possible rejection would be part of an unenviable list of players who have already turned down St James’ Park this summer, including Bryan Mbumeo, Liam Delap, James Trafford, and Joao Pedro.
