Tyler Morton has officially signed for Ligue 1 side Lyon, leaving Liverpool in a deal worth £15 million. The 22-year-old midfielder agreed personal terms and finalised his move to France on Tuesday, 5 August.
A product of Liverpool’s academy, Morton joined the Reds aged just seven and rose through the ranks, featuring for nearly every youth side at the club. He spent the last two seasons out on loan with Championship outfits Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, gaining valuable first-team experience.
With new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot opting to streamline his midfield options, Morton now heads to Lyon where he has been endorsed by new manager Paulo Fonseca.
"Morton is a midfielder I like a lot – he’s a good passer and stays calm under pressure. He has the right profile to fit our philosophy," Fonseca said in a recent interview.
Trey Nyoni set for first-team promotion at Liverpool
Liverpool's Trey Nyoni celebrates after scoring the fourth goal on August 11, 2024
Morton’s departure paves the way for 18-year-old Trey Nyoni to step up. The teenage midfielder, who joined Liverpool from Leicester City in 2023, has caught the eye during pre-season and is now in contention for a full-time role in Slot’s senior squad.
"With Tyler Morton’s departure, 18-year-old Trey Nyoni is now being considered a full-time member of Liverpool’s first team after a strong pre-season," reported The Times journalist Paul Joyce.
Born in Leicester in June 2007, Trey Nyoni is widely seen as one of the brightest prospects in Liverpool’s academy. He made his senior debut in February 2024 during an FA Cup tie against Southampton, becoming the youngest player in Liverpool history to feature in the competition.
Elegant on the ball and tactically versatile, Nyoni has featured in five of Liverpool’s six pre-season friendlies so far. After scoring in the 3-1 win over Yokohama Marinos last Thursday, he reflected on his development:
"As Rio [Ngumoha] said, coming off the bench, you want to show what you can do… This pre-season feels different because everyone’s here – last year, lots were away at the Euros or Copa América. I just want to take it all in and learn every day from some of the best players in the world."
