Premier League club 'full speed ahead' with attempt to sign Brazil international

Nottingham Forest are reportedly pressing ahead with their attempts to finalise the transfer of Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

Although the East Midlands outfit must await to see if they will play Europa League or Conference League football this season, they have pressed ahead with summer incomings.

Jair Cunha, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus have all been added to Nuno Espirito Santo's first-team squad ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign.

However, with Danilo having left for Botafogo, the Portuguese is one central midfielder light as he prepares for the game with Brentford on August 17.

According to Tuttosport, Forest have settled on Luiz being their primary target to strengthen the engine room and are pushing to seal a deal.

What do Forest want to spend on Douglas Luiz?

The report suggests that agent Kia Joorabchian has already led discussions between the relevant parties in an effort to finalise a transfer.

A preliminary agreement is said to have been reached over personal terms, Forest prepared to offer Luiz a five-year contract if they acquire him on a permanent basis.

Any stumbling block could revolve around a fee and an option or obligation to buy. After an initial loan, Forest allegedly want to pay €34m (£29.63m) next summer if they are able to qualify for Europe for a second successive campaign.

Meanwhile, Juventus reportedly want to receive €40m (£34.86m) for the 27-year-old if they are to give a green light to a deal.

Relationships between Forest sporting director Edu Gaspar and Luiz's agent Joorabchian, as well as Juventus technical director Francois Modesto with English clubs, are noted as potential positives to wrapping up the process.

Luiz in need of fresh start

After a successful four-year stint at Aston Villa, everything appeared set up for Luiz to become a success at Juventus.

Instead, the 18-cap Brazil international has not been able to settle in Turin, nor earn a regular starting spot under Thiago Motta or Igor Tudor.

With 20 goals and 18 assists from 175 Premier League appearances, it makes sense for Luiz to return to England, and specifically the Midlands, for an important stage of his career.

While Luiz would never have envisaged joining Forest this time last year, he has a chance to kick-start his career at a club who want to follow a similar path to Aston Villa, transforming from relegation candidates to European regulars.
