Darwin Nunez has agreed on personal terms for his Liverpool exit.
The Anfield club wanted to allow Nunez time to find a willing suitor in Europe, with AC Milan still keen on the striker.
The Uruguayan scored only seven goals in 47 appearances across all competitions, a performance well below what was expected for a player of his transfer fee.
His time at Anfield seemed destined to end well before this record-breaking summer transfer window
For many Liverpool supporters, Nunez’s imminent departure is not only anticipated but also arguably necessary.
After three seasons marked by unfulfilled potential and missed opportunities, the club’s recent transfer activity sends a clear message that Arne Slot’s plans for Liverpool’s attack don’t revolve around the £85 million forward who once arrived amid great expectations from Benfica.
That’s why it’s somewhat surprising that Nunez is still at the club, especially given Napoli’s strong interest, although they chose not to meet Liverpool’s asking price.
However, Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that the Uruguayan has agreed on personal terms with Al-Hilal:
“On the night between 5 and 6 August, in fact, the Reds and Al-Hilal reached an agreement around 65 million euros including bonuses.”
“Before choosing Arabia, specifically, the Uruguayan had made very important salary requests, which the club coached by Simone Inzaghi has practically accepted.”
“The contractual details are being defined, then visits and signatures.”
“In general, these are figures that are decidedly out of the market for Italy and specifically for Milan, which was the most interested club.”
Nunez has already hit the ground running in Liverpool’s pre-season, scoring a hat-trick against Stoke City and finding the net twice against Athletic Bilbao on Monday evening.
But it seems that it arrives as too little and too late for the Uruguayan to revive his Anfield career.
