9-time Pro Bowler to former Alabama QB: ‘You are going to be a star in the NFL’

Russell Wilson served as the Seattle Seahawks quarterback for 10 seasons. He made the Pro Bowl nine times and played in two Super Bowls with Seattle, including the Seahawks’ 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in the 2013 NFL championship game.

Former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe hasn’t taken a snap in a game for Seattle. He joined the Seahawks in the third round of the NFL Draft on April 25.

But Wilson already sees big things ahead for Milroe.

In an event sponsored by Fanatics, NFL all-stars of the past shared messages with some of the league’s incoming rookies, and each first-year player got a jersey signed by his advisor.

Now with the New York Giants preparing for his 14th NFL season, Wilson inscribed on his jersey for Milroe: “You are going to be a star in the NFL! You are going to love Seattle. Go be great! God first.”

The Seahawks selected Milroe with the 92nd choice in the 2025 NFL Draft, the highest pick spent on a quarterback by Seattle since they took Wilson at No. 75 in 2012.

The Seahawks’ first depth chart of training camp shows Milroe as the No. 3 quarterback. But he’s expected to take the bulk of the snaps in the preseason for the Seahawks.

Sam Darnold is the presumptive starter at quarterback after being signed from the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent in March. Drew Lock is an experienced backup with 28 starts since entering the NFL in 2019.

At training camp, Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said Milroe “has taken a step from where he was in the spring.”

“You see a decisiveness in his game,” Macdonald said. “Eyes are in the right spot, more consistently. He could probably go into detail. It just seems to me like it’s a quicker delivery. The footwork is starting to match the routes and the concepts. He’s got a whole career ahead of him to improve, but excited to see him right now, and he’s doing a good job.”

The Seahawks start their three-game preseason schedule at 9 p.m. CDT Thursday against the Las Vegas Raiders at Lumen Field in Seattle.
