Vikings' Kevin O'Connell Doesn't Hold Back in JJ McCarthy Message

The Minnesota Vikings made the strong decision this offseason to move forward with second-year signal caller J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback.

After a 2024 season that saw them go 14-3 and be one of the top contenders in the NFL with Sam Darnold leading the way, the Vikings are entering a new era. McCarthy is being thrown to the wolves in his second season after missing his first year with a knee injury.

No one knows what to expect from the young quarterback. He proved himself to be a winner in college, leading the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship win in his final year with the team. However, the NFL is a different beast.

Kevin O'Connell and Minnesota made the decision to pass on Aaron Rodgers to make McCarthy their starting quarterback. That shows a lot of confidence in a player who hasn't played a single professional snap.

With that being said, O'Connell opened up with a very strong message about McCarthy ahead of the team's preseason opener.

"He wouldn't be here if we didn't think he had the skillset required to play this offense," O'Connell said. "Does that mean that it has to be from day one otherwise we're all gonna make some flash judgement of what he is or isn't. That's not how I'm gonna roll. This is a minute to minute thing of growth and development."

McCarthy does have a couple of things going for him.

First and foremost, O'Connell is a top-tier quarterback coach. He played the position himself and he has worked well with both Kirk Cousins and Darnold. O'Connell will do the same with McCarthy.

Secondly, the Vikings have elite talent around McCarthy offensively. Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones are three of those players, with Jordan Addison being an elite wide receiver talent as well after he returns from his three-game suspension.

Only time will tell if McCarthy is ready for the challenge. Minnesota has taken a huge leap of faith in him and there are a lot of nerves from the fans about whether or not it will pay off.

Expect to see McCarthy be a huge topic of conversation throughout the NFL as the season gets underway.
