Liverpool have Benjamin Sesko trump card for Newcastle as transfer contact made

Liverpool may have one final trump card as they scramble to make their Alexander Isak dominoes fall in their favour. Manchester United remaining the favourites to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig could scupper Liverpool’s move for Isak.

Newcastle will only sell Isak when they have a replacement lined up. The Magpies believed that man was Sesko, and reportedly made a £70million offer for the Slovenia international. Leipzig are said to have accepted that proposal, which would have increased Liverpool’s hopes of signing Isak. However, on Wednesday, it was widely claimed that Sesko’s preference is to join Man Utd. A deal between the two clubs is rapidly progressing.

However, Liverpool may decide to use Harvey Elliott’s uncertain future as one final throw of the dice in an effort to land Isak this summer. According to The Athletic, Leipzig have made contact with the Anfield outfit over signing Elliott, whose chances of regular football under Arne Slot next season look slim.

Newcastle have also been linked with the 22-year-old, who shone for England at the Under-21 European Championship earlier this summer. Liverpool may decide that sending the midfielder to Tyneside will improve Eddie Howe’s team and therefore tempt Sesko into a blockbuster U-turn.

Newcastle are yet to make a first-team signing amid a tough summer. But Elliott’s arrival could pique Sesko’s interest. The 22-year-old striker may see the Liverpool star as the creative outlet he would need to thrive at Newcastle.

At present, Sesko sees a Man Utd team making strong improvements under Ruben Amorim. Despite the absence of European football at Old Trafford, it is understandable that he views the Red Devils as the more appealing option.

Elliott has already hinted at finding a new club, saying earlier this summer: “Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But as I said, most importantly, it’s just about what’s best for my career.”

Sesko seems set to join Man Utd, but Newcastle could make one final attempt to persuade him to join them instead. They already have Champions League football for the second time in three years. Elliott’s possible arrival would strengthen their midfield.

Liverpool remain interested in signing Isak and should do everything they can to control Sesko’s future so that he joins Newcastle. That would then allow the Magpies to accept a proposal from Liverpool for their star forward.

With Sesko likely to move to Old Trafford, Liverpool’s hopes of signing Isak are now diminishing.
