Aston Villa favourite close to agreeing new contract

Though some final details still need to be ironed out, the 32-year-old is expected to sign a deal which will keep him at Villa Park until 2028.

Digne’s future had been the subject of some uncertainty earlier in the summer after it emerged Atletico Madrid had placed him on their list of targets.

The France international, who earns around £120,000-a-week, was also entering the final year of the contract he signed when joining Villa from Everton for £25million in January, 2022.

But the club ultimately decided they wanted to keep him on board and talks over an extension have progressed positively in recent weeks.

Digne is regularly held up by Emery as an example to others having successfully convinced the Spaniard of his qualities through his performances.

Emery was initially unconvinced by Digne after succeeding Steven Gerrard as Villa boss in November 2022, to the extent his first signing for the club was another left-back, Alex Moreno. Villa also considered cashing in on Digne two summers ago, when he was the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia.

But he ultimately stayed and went on to be a key part of the team which qualified for the Champions League in 2024, while he also started the majority of Premier League matches despite the £37.5m arrival of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.

Digne will become the third Villa player this summer to agree a new contract after Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara.

The club are also thought to be ready to offer Morgan Rogers improved terms in recognition of his progress, despite the England international only penning his current deal last November.

Jacob Ramsey, however, enters the final weeks of the window with his future uncertain after talks over a new contract earlier this year failed to progress.

The 24-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current deal, is not pushing to leave but the situation is being monitored by several clubs, most notably West Ham, who are weighing up whether to make a move before the September 1 deadline.
