Ex-Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has backed his former club to make a move for Aston Villa keeper Emi Martinez.
Speaking to The Escapist magazine (quotes via The Mirror), Petit said the Argentinian international can offer a great deal to the Blues’ squad both on and off the pitch:
“Emiliano Martinez would be an inspiration in the Chelsea dressing room. I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles; he has that experience. He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper.”
“He would be a very good signing for Chelsea, and 32 isn’t old for a goalkeeper. I think he’d link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club.”
Martinez is keen on leaving Villa
The 32-year-old reportedly offered himself to Manchester United earlier this summer as he is looking for a fresh challenge.

It is believed that the Red Devils proposed a loan offer for Martinez, which was immediately knocked. Villa are reportedly holding out for a permanent deal, with a fee between £30m and £40m being required.
Chelsea have considered signing an experienced keeper
The Blues held formal talks about purchasung Mike Maignan from AC Milan in June. However, Enezo Maresca’s side were not willing to pay more than €15m to €20m for the France number one as he has less than a year left on his contract.
Since then, reporters have been briefed that the club are no longer looking for a new No. 1 to replace Robert Sanchez, but the interest in Maignan indicates they are open to bringing in someone for the right price. It is up for debate, though, whether they would be willing to match Martinez’s valuation.
