Shedeur Sanders gets starting job in first preseason game vs. Panthers

Shedeur Sanders will start in his first NFL game on Friday.

The former Colorado standout, and son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, will start under center for the Cleveland Browns in the team’s first preseason game of the year against the Carolina Panthers.

Sanders is one of five quarterbacks on Cleveland’s roster this preseason, including Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Tyler Huntley and Kenny Pickett.

Sanders was the sixth quarterback taken in this year’s NFL Draft and, to the surprise of some league executives, was not selected until the fifth round.

Sanders was a decorated player in college, competing at Jackson State and Colorado under his father. During his final season at Colorado, he was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, won the Johnny Unitas Award and was a Second-Team All-American.

Cleveland’s QB room is packed this preseason, and got even bigger with the signing of Huntley on Monday. The 27-year old was a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 with the Baltimore Ravens and was brought due to injuries to the team’s group of signal-callers.

Pickett hasn’t participated in team drills since suffering a mild hamstring injury on July 26.

Gabriel and Sanders, have also both missed time. Gabriel sat out of a practice on Monday due to hamstring tightness, and although Sanders has since returned, he dropped out of an Aug. 2 session due to arm soreness.
