Fernandes drops heartfelt message for Man Utd legend ahead of emotional return

Manchester United are set to face Fiorentina in their final pre-season fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The tie will see the much-anticipated return of club legend David de Gea, who departed two years ago following the expiry of his contract.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes added a touch of humour ahead of the reunion, leaving a heartfelt message for his former teammate.

He said (via ManUtd.com): “David, my friend, I can’t wait to see you at the Snapdragon Cup.

“I hope you enjoy being back at Old Trafford, to see your fans, your house, your home.

“At the same time, I hope I score some goals against you and we enjoy the day together!

“See you soon, my friend.”

De Gea remains a favourite among fans

The Spaniard enjoyed a highly successful career at United and was arguably the best player at the club over the last decade.

He made 545 appearances for the club and won five trophies including one Premier League title and the Europa League.

De Gea also made history by winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award a record-breaking four times, a feat matched only by Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

After his emotional exit in 2023, the goalkeeper spent a year without a club before Fiorentina came calling.

De Gea has played a crucial role for the Serie A outfit over the past season and will be eager to make his mark on his return.

The Red Devils signed Andre Onana as his replacement from Inter Milan but the 29-year-old has failed to live up to expectations.

United never gave De Gea the farewell he deserved, and Saturday offers the perfect stage for fans to finally honour him with a standing ovation.
