Liverpool join race to sign ex-Premier League midfielder

Liverpool face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

The season curtain-raiser sees the Premier League champions face the FA Cup holders, with Manchester City having defeated rivals Manchester United on penalties in last season’s instalment.

The Reds have been in good form during pre-season, most recently defeating Spanish side Athletic Bilbao 3-2 in their final friendly of the summer at Anfield on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah was on the scoresheet against Bilbao, while Cody Gakpo netted twice for Arne Slot’s side.

This summer has already been a busy one for the Merseyside giants with no fewer than four players having already arrived at Anfield.

Now, it appears that the Premier League champions are on the hunt for a Serie A star.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool have joined the race to land Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The 27-year-old joined the Old Lady from Aston Villa last summer, having made more than 200 appearances during an impressive stint with the Villans.

During that time Luiz scored 22 goals and provided 24 assists for Villa, captaining Unai Emery’s side on a number of occasions.

Luiz endured a tricky debut season in Turin, though, making 27 appearances across all competitions but starting only three Serie A matches.

The report claims that several clubs are interested in the Brazilian, including Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Leeds United and West Ham United.

Forest are said to currently be in pole position to land the midfielder, who is said to have already rejected a proposed move to Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Luiz is under contract with Juventus until the end of the 2028/29 season, but it appears increasingly likely that he may return to the Premier League this summer with several English clubs interested in the player.
