Former Liverpool defender Jas Matthews has joined FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division club Burnley on a free transfer.
The Clarettes announced news of the deal via a post on their official club website this evening.
The 32-year-old centre-back joins Burnley after leaving former club Liverpool earlier this summer. The player enjoyed two spells on Merseyside between 2018 and 2019 and from 2021 to 2025. Matthews made 97 appearances for The Reds in all competitions while she scored five goals. The player was a Barclays WSL2 winner with Liverpool in 2021/2022.
Matthews has bags of experience and she will be hoping to help Burnley win promotion this season.
After signing on with Burnley, Matthews said “I’m really excited. When I spoke to Matt [Beard] and he said he was coming to Burnley, it was a no-brainer for me to come too. I then spoke to Lola [Ogunbote] about the ambitions of this club and when I came down to see the facilities I was blown away, so I can’t wait to get going.
“I have a lot of experience and ultimately that’s why I came here – to try and push Burnley to where they belong, and I’m here to try and win the league.”
Matthews follows former Liverpool teammate Yana Daniëls in signing for Burnley earlier today.
