Ter Stegen refuses to change stance on medical report amid war with Barcelona

Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen is currently recovering from the back surgery he underwent in France recently.

The 33-year-old veteran finds himself in a tense situation with the Catalans over his refusal to sign the consent to share his medical report, estimating an absence of over four months, with La Liga’s Medical Commission.

This document is key to allowing the club to treat his case as a long-term injury and free up salary space to register Joan Garcia. Due to his refusal, Barça have responded by threatening to open disciplinary proceedings against him.

Ter Stegen will not change his stance

However, according to SPORT, Ter Stegen will stand firm on his current position and not sign the document. The Barcelona captain believes he is within his legal rights to refuse.

He is convinced that, based on his recovery timeline from the first surgery, he could return to action well before four months. Signing the report would mean forfeiting his salary until the next transfer window opens in January – something he does not consider justified.

Furthermore, Ter Stegen believes that Barcelona’s recent signings and contract renewals, including deals with key players, were executed before his latest injury. Therefore, the club should have plans for registering new players rather than relying on his injury.

Ter Stegen does not wish to enter into any controversy with Barcelona. He has been at the club for over a decade and has won major titles.

The German goalkeeper is particularly proud of the support shown by his teammates, which he views as a sign of mutual respect built over the years. He has received public and private backing regarding his captaincy amid reports that the club wish to take it away from him.

Ter Stegen’s contract runs until 30 June 2028, following his most recent renewal under the current board. His aim is to honour that contract and continue competing for the starting position once he recovers.

For now, however, he refuses to sign the medical report to be sent to La Liga.
