Jeremy Sochan's future with Spurs will be determined quickly

Jeremy Sochan has been a core part of the San Antonio Spurs' rebuild since the moment he was drafted, but the next chapter of his future could come into focus sooner than expected. [According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst](https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=HCZvLV0Zd_Mn3706&t=3017&v=CLp0y0h57tE&feature=youtu.be), the Spurs may look to trade the 21-year-old forward if the two sides cannot agree to a contract extension before opening night of the 2025-26 season.

The Spurs are not in a position to be passive. With [De’Aaron Fox now under a massive new contract](https://airalamo.com/saving-grace-spurs-max-extension-deaaron-fox-hope-fans), and Victor Wembanyama’s max deal looming just two years away, San Antonio’s front office must decide who will truly be part of the team’s foundation moving forward.

With that in mind, it wouldn't be the most surprising thing ever if the team views Sochan as a more realistic trade piece than some fans anticipated. He is eligible for an extension this summer, and if there is significant distance between his asking price and what the Spurs are willing to pay, it makes sense for the team to explore some options. Letting the situation linger into the regular season would only add more pressure and could potentially lessen Sochan’s trade value.

Moving Sochan may not be out of the question

--------------------------------------------

From a basketball standpoint, Sochan remains one of the most unique players on the roster. His versatility as a defender, ability to be a ball-handler and willingness to do the dirty work all helped him earn the trust of Gregg Popovich early in his career.

At the same time, Sochan's role has fluctuated, and his fit alongside Wembanyama and Fox is not entirely seamless on the offensive end. If the Spurs believe they can find a better complementary piece while keeping financial flexibility, they may not want to wait around.

There is also the simple fact that the Spurs will not be able to pay everyone. The roster is young and full of promise, but contracts are coming. If the organization is prioritizing Wembanyama, Fox, and perhaps even Devin Vassell, someone will eventually get left on the outside looking in when it comes to the long-term plans. That someone may end up being Sochan unless the two sides find common ground before the season begins.

Sochan has said he wants to stay in San Antonio, and the Spurs haven't ruled that out. But at this stage of the rebuild, decisions are going to come quickly, and the clock on this one is already ticking.
