Arsenal suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Villarreal in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, with Mikel Arteta’s side showing flashes of attacking promise but ultimately coming up short in a lively encounter.
The Gunners fielded a mix of youth and experience, as Mikel Arteta continued to fine-tune his side ahead of the new season. Arsenal made a lively start and were rewarded early when Bukayo Saka opened the scoring with a composed finish after linking up brilliantly with Nwaneri on the right. The Gunners looked sharp in possession and controlled the tempo in the opening stages, pressing Villarreal high and forcing errors.

But the substitutions disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm, and Villarreal took advantage. They went ahead shortly after the restart with a well-worked team move that ended in a low drive into the bottom corner.
Arsenal responded positively, with Gyökeres making his mark. The striker latched onto a clever through-ball from Ødegaard and smashed in an equaliser, giving fans a glimpse of his clinical finishing ability. It was a bright moment in an otherwise shaky second-half showing.
Despite pulling level, Arsenal couldn’t maintain their composure defensively. Villarreal struck again late on, capitalising on a loose ball at the edge of the box to fire home what would prove to be the winner. A late flurry from Arsenal, including a headed effort from Saliba and a curling shot from Rice, couldn’t salvage the result.
While the defeat will be disappointing, Arteta is likely to take some positives from the game. Saka looked sharp and involved, Nwaneri impressed once again in midfield, and Gyökeres continued to show his threat in front of goal. However, questions remain about Arsenal’s defensive shape, especially when key starters are rotated.
With the Premier League season fast approaching, the focus will now turn to Arsenal’s final pre-season match in the Emirates Cup. Arteta will be hoping to iron out the remaining issues and get his side firing on all cylinders before the competitive action begins.
