Manchester United have made three summer signings so far this year, and are working to add more.

Ruben Amorim promised a heavy squad rebuild this summer, and his United side needed it after a year where they finished 15th in the Premier League table, and without a piece of silverware.

United have already added serious improvements in attack as they signed both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to help with more goals, something that is needed considering they were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league last season.

The Red Devils are also looking to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, and have agreed on personal terms with the Slovenian striker, despite the fact that Newcastle are offering him Champions League football next year. It shows that the Red Devils still have their strong transfer pull, even after a period of turmoil and a lack of European football.

Man United need serious improvement to avoid Newcastle-esque transfer window

United have managed to sign some big players this summer, and Sesko seems to prefer the move to Old Trafford. It shows that they still have the pulling power with the history and size of the club, despite their mediocrity last year.

However, one thing that’s been demonstrated in the Premier League this summer is that a lack of pulling power can become a serious issue for a team looking to improve. The best example is Newcastle United, who missed out on Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and James Trafford, to name a few. That is even though they are in the Champions League after a top-five finish last year.

If United suffer yet another mediocre season in both the Premier League and FA Cup next year, their pulling power could quickly diminish, and they could end up missing out on several top targets, much like Eddie Howe’s side has done this summer.

They can’t afford to waste this ‘blessed’ window where they have seen players still choose them over other Premier League clubs, meaning that in an ideal world, Amorim still needs to make sure he addresses the remaining needs he has. Cunha was the subject of interest from several clubs but opted for United while Mbeumo was wanted by Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle and chose Old Trafford.

What do United still need this summer?

If the Red Devils can sign Sesko up front, they have all but addressed every need in attack by bringing in a brand new front three for Amorim to use in Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko. But they have glaring needs elsewhere too.

There is a distinct lack of depth in defensive midfielders behind Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, with Casemiro the only other realistic option. However, the Brazilian is now 33 years old and in the last year of his contract.

If Amorim’s side suffers another mid-table finish next year, that historic pulling power could disappear, and next summer’s window may not be so successful. Amorim has to make the most of it.
