Personal terms agreed - Newcastle United hopeful transfer nightmare about to end

Big news has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s search for a centre-back this summer.

Newcastle United have reportedly agreed personal terms with AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

Eddie Howe is a long-term admirer and the Magpies were linked with a possible move last summer. At the time, Newcastle changed tack and pursued Marc Guehi - to little avail - as PSR restrictions hamstrung their chances.

A centre-back remains a top target for United amid a summer of chaos at St James’ Park. Incomings have been difficult to come by for Newcastle despite the financial shackles loosening and Champions League football on offer.

Top targets have moved elsewhere, with Alexander Isak - the club’s best and most valuable player - also exploring his options. The Swede is currently at the centre of the world’s leading transfer story after signalling his desire to join Liverpool.

Newcastle United make Malick Thiaw approach

Just 25 days of the window remain for Newcastle to get their ship in order. As for Thiaw, NewcastleWorld understands the Magpies have made an approach for the German international.

While NUFC Blog initially reported the story last week, Sky Sports Germany have also gone as far as to claim personal terms are agreed, with the two clubs negotiating a £30million deal. At 23, Thiaw - a former Sandro Tonali teammate - would add much-needed youth to Howe’s backline.

Fabian Schar and Dan Burn turn 34 next season, with Sven Botman also struggling to stay fit in recent seasons. His price tag is also relatively modest compared to the fees Newcastle have been quoted for other targets this summer.

AC Milan stance on Malick Thiaw

New Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has been impressed with Thiaw in pre-season and wants to keep him at the San Siro. Earlier this summer, the Serie A giants all but agreed a deal with Como, a resurgent club owned by the billionaire Hartono brothers.

However, the defender is only thought to be keen on leaving for a Champions League outfit. Thiaw can operate in a back four or five-man defence and has earned three caps for Germany since joining Milan three years ago.
