Aston Villa have been handed a big injury concern ahead of the first Premier League game of the season against Newcastle United.

The Magpies start their campaign with a trip to Villa Park in just nine days. Both teams are currently undergoing their final preparations ahead of the match.

Villa were in action on Wednesday night as they took on Italian side AS Roma at Walsall's Bescot Stadium.

However, a major injury scare took the shine off a 4-0 thumping of the Serie A outfit.

Morgan Rogers was forced to leave the pitch due to an injury.

The forward was brought on at the start of the second half, but his participation was cut short within minutes of his introduction.

Following a fall that clearly caused him distress, Rogers received medical aid on the field. BirminghamLive reported that Villa's medical team seemed to focus their attention on his ankle.

He made a brief attempt to jog and continue playing but soon indicated with a shake of his head that he was unable to proceed

At the time, Villa were leading 3-0 thanks to goals from Emi Buendía, Jacob Ramsey, and Ollie Watkins. They went on to add a fourth goal late in the second half through Donyell Malen.

Rogers was a key player for Villa last season as they challenged, alongside Newcastle, for a place in the Champions League. The 23-year-old scored eight times and provided 11 assists in 37 Premier League outings.

Despite Rogers' goal involvements, Newcastle beat their rivals to a place in the Champions League with Villa having to settle for a Europa League spot.
