Report: Ben Godfrey could be set for England return with former Everton teammate

Everton fans will have mixed opinions on Ben Godfrey as he embarks on a new chapter.

Godfrey showed promise at Goodison Park, which explains why the defender completed a £10 million move to Atalanta last summer.

Of course, since his big switch to the Serie A, the 27-year-old hasn’t endured the brightest of starts in Italy.

Godfrey joined Ipswich Town on loan as he looked to find his form again, but he didn’t quite impress his parent club.

This led the former Everton centre-back into more trouble as Godfrey is set to leave Atalanta, and one club in England are looking into the defender’s services.

Former Everton defender Ben Godfrey approached by Sheffield United

With David Moyes needing defensive cover, it might be a surprise that Everton themselves haven’t looked into returning for their former player.

However, no concrete links have emerged despite Godfrey showing his fondness for Everton; nonetheless, a return to England could be in the works, away from Merseyside.

This is what journalist Pete O’Rourke is suggesting, as Sheffield United are exploring a possible loan deal for the centre-back.

He won’t have the chance to face the Toffees with the Blades in the Championship, but if he impresses, they could meet again in the Premier League.

From an Everton perspective though, it will be good to see two former teammates reunite, emulating their time with the Toffees.

Ben Godfrey could reunite with Tom Davies after tenure at Everton

The Atalanta defender was a hit at Everton, but a move to the Championship could signify that Moyes’ side are past his credentials.

Carlo Ancelotti loved Godfrey as he was a big success under the Italian, and he showed his top defending with the Toffees.

Now he’s embarking on a potential new story in Sheffield, he will link up once again with former Everton midfielder Tom Davies.

Davies joined the Championship side on a free transfer in 2023 after eight seasons on Merseyside, and Godfrey claimed the midfielder was a big part in helping him settle in after his move from Norwich City in 2020.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the defender said: “As soon as I heard the whispers about Everton, that was it for me

“I got the vibe that Tom really enjoys his football here. It’s a tight-knit bunch, and he made me aware it would be easy to settle in.”

“To hear that from someone at the club says a lot. He’s another young footballer who is learning, and it told me this was the right environment for me.”

Both players could now have the chance to build a new legacy away from Everton, and if Godfrey rises again, Moyes might want to keep one eye on his situation.
