‘Serious enquiry’ from West Ham – Hammers offer Bundesliga club less than hoped for

West Ham United have seen an enquiry for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer rejected by the German club.

That’s according to BILD, who report that West Ham offered less than the €5m that Werder had been hoping to get for Zetterer this summer.

The newspaper reports that there was no concrete offer from the Hammers but a ‘serious enquiry’ for the goalkeeper. This was rejected outright.

West Ham’s interest in Werder’s number one remains and is known to Bremen, but Zetterer would prefer to stay where he is for the time being. That could change if new coach Horst Steffen were to choose youngster Mio Backhaus as the future starting goalkeeper.

Steffer is yet to make that choice, but it could come after Saturday’s friendly against Udine, but a change in the situation is conceivable. Indeed, a move to West Ham could be the best solution for him.

The Hammers are very much in the hunt for a new goalkeeper this month and have been heavily linked with a move for Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor.

The belief is that the deal is in the final stages so the enquiry for Zetterer makes little sense, although a goalkeeper is clearly on their wish list.
