Newcastle release emotional goodbye video as Martin Dubravka joins Burnley

Martin Dubravka has left Newcastle United.

After seven and a half years at the club, the Slovakian has departed, joining newly-promoted Burnley on a permanent deal.

The 36-year-old arrived on Tyneside back in 2018, signing under Rafa Benitez, shining on his debut in a home win over Man Utd and going on to play a key role last season, filling in admirably for Nick Pope before signing a new one-year deal.

However, with Aaron Ramsdale signed on a loan-to-buy deal from Southampton, Dubravka had dropped further down the pecking order and has been in discussions to leave over the past week, as we revealed in an NUFCBlog exclusive on Sunday.

In light of his exit, the club have released an emotional goodbye message from the man himself, who reflects on the “special connection” he’s built and his time on Tyneside; a place where his son was born:

“It’s a special connection for me.” 🫶

Discussing his move to Burnley, where he’ll ironically replace former target James Traffford, Dubravka said: “I’m delighted to be here. It’s a really exciting time to be joining this Club, ahead of our return to the Premier League.

“I’ve only heard really positive things about the club, the culture and the environment we work in, so I’m excited about getting going with the season kicking off next weekend.”

“Burnley had a fantastic campaign last season, built on a superb defensive record, and I can’t wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad of players.

“I’m really looking forward to playing for the club in front of our passionate fans.”

Goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka has completed a permanent transfer to fellow Premier League side Burnley, bringing his seven-and-a-half years on Tyneside to a close.

The 36-year-old initially joined Newcastle United on loan in January 2018 and made the switch permanent that summer after an impressive start to life in the Premier League.

Dúbravka made a memorable debut for the Magpies against Manchester United in February 2018, keeping a clean sheet and earning Player of the Match in a 1-0 victory at St. James’ Park.

Throughout his time with the club, the Slovakian international made 179 appearances in all competitions and kept 51 clean sheets.

Dúbravka played a key role in last season’s Carabao Cup triumph, making four appearances and keeping three clean sheets, including in each leg of the semi-final victory over Arsenal.

He also featured 10 times during the last Premier League campaign, keeping five clean sheets to help the club achieve UEFA Champions League qualification.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Martin for his efforts while with Newcastle United and wishes him well for the future.

All the best, Heco!
