Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno should have been given his chance by the German national team already, and it is ‘incomprehensible’ that it hasn’t happened.
That’s according to former Germany international Tim Wiese, [speaking to SportBILD](https://sportbild.bild.de/fussball/nationalmannschaft/klartext-vom-ex-werder-keeper-tim-wiese-fordert-leno-als-wm-torhueter-689306c0ecb6874199e8c9aa), who has given his backing to the Fulham goalkeeper.
The question of who will be Germany’s number one for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico is currently a hot topic for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Barcelona’s Marc Andre Ter-Stegen is the current number one but is injured and out of the picture at Barcelona, creating an issue on that front.
Nagelsmann has made it clear that he’ll only be number one if he’s playing regularly at club level and Joan Garcia’s arrival from Espanyol has put that in doubt.
Leno has taken himself out of the reckoning, declining a call up almost a year ago when it was made clear to him that he wouldn’t be playing.
He instead decided to stay in London and train with Fulham, a decision which Nagelsmann didn’t like. Wiese, though, believes it is strange that Germany aren’t turning to the 33-year-old already.
_“First of all, we have to wait and see whether Marc-Andre ter Stegen returns to his old form after his injury – assuming he’s even allowed to play for the club again,”_ he said.
_“I would therefore bet on a different goalkeeper for the World Cup – especially since national coach Julian Nagelsmann has made it clear that he won’t bring Manuel Neuer back._
_“Bernd Leno is a player based on his performance. He’s played consistently well for a long time in England for Premier League club Fulham. He would have deserved it._
_“I don’t know why he wasn’t considered. I have no idea if there were any disputes between him and the DFB. In any case, it’s incomprehensible that he wasn’t given a proper chance.”_
