Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Levi Colwill has suffered a major injury setback in training.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday morning, Maresca said that the centre-half will need to undergo scans to determine how long he will be out for:
“We had a problem the last two days with Levi Colwill, that we don’t know how long he is going to be out. So for us, we will see, hopefully not too long, but for sure it’s a problem for us.”
“We need to wait, we don’t know yet [what the specific injury is]. It was in the first session on Monday, just in the last minutes of the session. He felt something and, as I said, we need to wait and then we see.”
Unsurprisingly, supporters on X are worried that Colwill could be sidelined for a considerable length of time:

Hopefully it’s nothing serious. We really can’t afford to lose Colwill this early.

Chalobah Tosin/Badia CB pairing is something I never prayed of, we need to avoid it by any means necessary 💯

Chelsea do have plenty of centre-back options
The arrival of Jorrel Hato from Ajax means that Maresca does have several candidates to replace Colwill if needed.
In addition to Hato, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah can both be deployed in the left-sided centre-half role if required.
Could the Blues go back into the market to replace Colwill?
Maresca did hint that the club could sign another defender if the England international is sidelined for a lengthy period.
Over the last few months, the club has been linked with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. The former Chelsea academy graduate has less than a year left on his contract at Selhurst Park.
