Newcastle United have taken a big step toward ending their transfer drought — and it might be music to Liverpool’s ears.
According to reports from Sky Sport Germany, Newcastle have reached full agreement on personal terms with AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.
The 23-year-old is now reportedly close to signing a four-year deal, though talks between the two clubs are still ongoing over a final fee.
Thiaw, who impressed during Milan’s recent Champions League campaigns, has been on Newcastle’s radar since last summer.
Head coach Eddie Howe even spoke about the German defender while on pre-season duty in Japan last year, saying: “He’s a very good player, but that’s it.”
It looks like now, Newcastle are ready to turn admiration into action. Their latest bid stands at €30 million, though Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri reportedly wants to keep Thiaw at the San Siro. Still, the Magpies remain hopeful.
With their defense in need of fresh legs — and fresh ideas — Thiaw would be a timely addition.
Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Burn, and Emil Krafth are all in their 30s. Sven Botman’s fitness concerns haven’t helped either. It’s clear Newcastle are ready to reboot their backline.

How Newcastle signing Malick Thiaw could help Liverpool?
Here’s the twist. Newcastle’s move for Thiaw might make life easier for Liverpool in the transfer market.
The Reds have shown interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi — so have Newcastle. But if the Magpies land Thiaw, it’s likely they’ll cool off their pursuit of Guehi. That’s great news for Liverpool.
Palace reportedly want £50 million for Guehi. But with only a year left on his contract, Liverpool could now afford to wait and go for him on a free next summer. That’s smart business — and good timing.
