Chelsea face concern over injury sustained by key defender during pre-season

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has revealed that he is facing a potential "problem" over the fitness of Levi Colwill.

Despite showing inconsistency during Maresca's first campaign in charge, Colwill eventually established himself as one of the Italian's most trusted players during the business end of the season.

As well as making 35 Premier League appearances, the England international starred during the Club World Cup, playing a crucial role in helping Chelsea keep a clean sheet against Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

However, it has been revealed by Maresca that the 22-year-old sustained an injury during the early stages of pre-season, which began for Chelsea on Monday.

Maresca speaks on Colwill injury

At a press conference held on Thursday morning, Maresca said that the left-sided centre-back had "felt something" and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

The Italian said, as quoted by The Standard: "We had a problem the last two days with Levi Colwill, that we don’t know how long he is going to be out.

“So for us, we will see, hopefully not too long, but for sure it’s a problem for us. We need to wait, we don’t know yet.

“It was in the first session on Monday, just in the last minutes of the session. He felt something and, as I said, we need to wait and then we see.”

How could Chelsea respond?

Like many positions on the pitch, Chelsea are not short of options in central defence and would not necessarily have to act in the transfer market.

Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile and Jorrel Hato are all senior options heading into 2025-26.

Badiashile will be viewed as a like-for-like replacement, with new addition Hato largely being viewed as backup to Marc Cucurella at left-back.

Nevertheless, if Colwill is ruled out in the long term, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Chelsea could look to sign a new centre-back for the left-hand-side role.

A potential stumbling block is their financial situation. Unless Chelsea generate more funds through sales than they spend this summer, UEFA will prevent them from registering new signings for the Champions League.
