Mayenda hardly featured for Sunderland in his first season at the club and spent time out on loan at Hibs. But he established himself as a key figure for Regis Le Bris' side last term, starring throughout the campaign with 10 goals, including the crucial equaliser in the play-off final against Sheffield United.

The striker is now set to play a pivotal role in the Premier League this season, and will compete with Wilson Isidor and new signing Marc Guiu for a spot in the side.

Sunderland bosses have been thrilled with Mayenda's development and believe there's a lot more to come from the youngster, who earned his first Spain Under-21 call-up earlier this year.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “We are delighted with Eliezer’s progress throughout the last two years.

"Whether you’re a supporter, a member of staff, or one of his team-mates, it’s been immensely rewarding to follow and support his development to this point.

"Although this is a moment to reflect and celebrate his progress, it is also an opportunity to reset our objectives and expectations.
