Tight end Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs were stomped by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, ending their bid to become the first NFL franchise to win three consecutive Super Bowls in embarrassing fashion.
In the immediate aftermath of the loss, Kelce was extremely unhappy with his performance and the result.
“I think the biggest thing is that I love playing the game of football,” Kelce said. “I love playing. I still feel like I can play it at a high level and possibly at a higher level than I did last year. I don’t think it was my best outing.
“I think I let my guys down in a lot more moments than I helped them, especially if you look at my track record and how I’ve been in years past. I want to give it a good run. I got a bad taste in my mouth in how I ended last year and how well I was playing and how accountable I was to the people around me.”
However, Kelce has since changed his attitude completely towards his failure on the game’s biggest stage.
“I’ve thrown that thing in the trash,” Kelce said recently. “I’ve moved on. It happened sooner than you can imagine. I was pretty focused on this year in the offseason.”
Kelce’s head coach, Andy Reid, is happy with what he’s seen from his veteran tight end this offseason.
“He’s svelte right now. He looks like he’s 20. He’s doing a good job and he’s in great shape. I’m not sure he didn’t come in first on the whole conditioning thing. He was right up front. You can see he’s been working out. He’s worked hard to get to this spot.”
It’ll be interesting to see how much Kelce has left in the tank as the Chiefs lean on him for what may be his last crack at the Lombardi.
