Trevor Lawrence wants to throw even more passes to Travis Hunter Jr. The fifth-year NFL quarterback hopes the Jacksonville Jaguars will allow their star rookie wide receiver and defensive back to play more on offense.
It creates a unique predicament for the coaching staff and front office.
Do they listen to their star quarterback to keep him happy? Or do they do what they think is best in the long term?
Trevor Lawrence needs weapons.
Lawrence is playing on the second year of a lucrative contract extension. He has two primary targets in the passing game during the 2025 NFL season.
Brian Thomas Jr. went over 1,000 yards as a rookie last year. He will be book-ended by Travis Hunter.
And that’s about it…
Dyami Brown, Parker Washington, Joshua Cephus and Trenton Irwin are listed below them on the first unofficial depth chart. They will need to step up in a big way.
With that in mind, Trevor Lawrence would prefer to get more time with the No. 2 overall pick.
"Selfishly, yeah, I definitely want him on offense more."

He even presented the two-way rookie with a hypothetical question: “Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two?”
Travis Hunter the defensive back?
Most NFL teams seemed to consider Hunter as a defensive player first and an offensive player second prior to the NFL Draft. However, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns at Colorado in 2024 so it really depends on who you ask!
Everything is always subject to change at any moment but it seems like the Jaguars value him more as a pass-catcher. We’ll see.
Hunter is currently listed as a reserve cornerback in the backup spot behind fifth-year veteran Tyson Campbell. It is a shared role with Jarrian Jones.
Travis Hunter the wide receiver?
On the flip side of the ball, Travis Hunter Jr. is sloted on the initial depth chart as a starting wide receiver. He and Thomas Jr. are listed alongside Dyami Brown.
This could mean nothing. This could mean everything.
According to general manager James Gladstone, it is far too early to tell. He looks forward to seeing a more coherent plan of attack develop over the next few weeks. The pads are on. It’s go time.
“Yesterday was the first day that [Hunter] got a chance to do both sides of the ball in one single practice,” said Gladstone. “He’s doing it again today. So, we’ll see how that comes to life and really how it shows itself on the grass.”
Will the Jacksonville Jaguars give Trevor Lawrence what he wants or will they put their first-round draft pick on defense? We’re going to see both. The question is how much of each.
