The New York Jets are ushering in a new era of football, which will be led by new head coach Aaron Glenn. Glenn came over from the Detroit Lions, where he served as the defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2024.
Glenn appears to be a no-nonsense type of coach, and various interviews has shown that he likes to be upfront with players and media. That said, Glenn has made an important decision for the team's preseason games.
Glenn was asked if the starters for the Jets will take the field this weekend, and he answered with a resounding, "We're playing."
"I can't tell you how much the guys will play; that will be affected by how the game goes, but we're playing," Glenn added.
It is a rare site to see starters taking the field for preseason Week 1, but Glenn wants to see what the starters can do when the Jets take on the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night.
The offense will be led by Justin Fields, who came over from the Pittsburgh Steelers. After an impressive 4-2 start under Fields, he showcased enough for the Jets to bring him in on a two-year deal.
Fields did suffer a dislocated toe during training camp, but it appears that injury was not significant enough to keep him out long-term. He returned to practice the following day, and full team activities shortly after.
The Packers might not follow suit and play their starters, but Glenn can use the first preseason game to take stock of his current roster. If there are any concerns, those concerns can be settled through the rest of training camp and the additional two preseason games.
The Jets need a major boost after going 5-12 under Aaron Rodgers in 2024. Despite not having a terrible record, the Jets chose to fire Robert Saleh, replacing him with Jeff Ulbrich for the remainder of the season.
Ulbrich was not able to help the team rebound, and the Jets began their search for a new head coach following the conclusion of the 2024 season. With a new head coach and staff installed, the team could experience a resurgence.
The issue is that the AFC East has been dominated by the Buffalo Bills, and should remain so. However, the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins could come from behind to challenge for the divisional crown.
New York could do the same, but it's a tough division regardless of who the favorite is to win.
