Newcastle are considering a move for Aston Villa captain John McGinn, MailOnline journalist Craig Hope has revealed.
Eddie Howe is on the lookout for midfield reinforcements following Sean Longstaff’s departure to Leeds and has reportedly identified McGinn as a potential option.
The 30-year-old midfielder is believed to be high on Newcastle’s list of targets, with his reliability and character particularly impressing the Magpies.
McGinn, who joined Villa from Hibernian in the summer of 2018, could reportedly be keen on a new challenge away from the club, despite having two years left on his contract.

According to Hope, Aston Villa have already rebuffed interest in McGinn from Everton this summer, but there is a growing sense that the 30-year-old could depart before the deadline.
While Unai Emery wants to keep the 'superstar' Scotland international at the club, Villa may need to sell players to ease their PSR situation.
McGinn’s teammate Jacob Ramsey is also believed to be a player of interest for Newcastle, while Coventry City’s Jack Rudoni is also being considered.
Newcastle have so far endured a frustrating summer transfer window, as they are set to miss out on another of their forward targets, with Benjamin Sesko set to join Manchester United.
The Magpies were targeting the Slovenia international as a potential replacement for wantaway star Alexander Isak, but are expected to concede defeat, with Sesko close to signing a five-year deal with the Red Devils.
