LATROBE, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have ruled out multiple players for their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and will only play a handful of starters.
Tomlin says that quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver DK Metcalf, cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay, and Joey Porter Jr, running back Jaylen Warren, left guard Isaac Seumalo, outside linebackers T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig, inside linebacker Patrick Queen, safety DeShon Elliott, kicker Chris Boswell, and interior defensive lineman Cam Heyward will all not play so others can have more opportunity.
In addition to that, Tomlin says wide receiver Calvin Austin III (undisclosed), outside linebacker Alex Highsmith (groin), cornerback Donte Kent (foot/ankle), quarterback Will Howard (hand), and Cory Trice (hamstring) will all miss the game with injury.
First-round pick Derrick Harmon was banged-up and did not practice on Wednesday, but Tomlin expects him to play. The Jaguars are opting to play most of their starters, while the Steelers will take a more cautious approach.
Tomlin is hoping to see the Steelers hit the basics in their first preseason game, and evaluate younger players who could earn opportunities.
