Manara won a thriller in the big race on day two of the Brighton Festival – and headed off a repeat of history.

The three-year old ridden by David Egan won the Star Property Group Brighton Challenge Cup Handicap by a head from Lexington Knight.

Had Thomas Greatrex’s charge grabbed the win, he would have repeated his success of last year and emulated Uncle Dick’s feat the previous day when he successfully defended the Brighton Mile.

While the durable seven-year-old never went away in a tight finish, he was pipped to the post and missed out on a second Brighton win this year.

Manara lived up to the billing of 11-4 favourite.

The customary long-odds winner at Brighton was this time Swift Winds at 40-1 in the Alfriston Gardens Restricted Maiden Stakes.

Taryn Langley guided the winner home by just over a length from 11-8 favourite Cashbox.

Tony Carroll, a trainer with a great record at Brighton, had an 11-2 winner with Poetic Force in the opening race of Ladies Day.

Gary and Josh Moore, who also know a fair bit about the circuit, had a winner with 6-1 shot Silk and Steel.
