United eyeing Benfica striker

Man United may pull off a transfer twist for Benfica forward Vangelis Pavlidis in case Sesko slips through the net.

Benfica star on United radar

Manchester Utd are chasing one of Europe’s most lethal finishers as they keep tabs on Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis.

The Greek striker netted 30 goals last season across all competitions. He has become a serious alternative should Man Utd’s bid for Benjamin Sesko fall apart. Although, Sesko remains their priority this summer. Old Trafford is the player’s preferred destination. But, the race is heating up with Newcastle United also pushing hard for the star.

If that chase ends in disappointment, Pavlidis is a strong Plan B. Ruben Amorim, who knows the Portuguese league well, is reportedly keen to tap into that market again. He is familiar with the Primeira Liga. So, that has put Pavlidis near the top of his shortlist, as per The Sun. That is especially with the striker showing sharp finishing and consistent form.

Natural Finisher Could Fit United’s Attack

At only 26, Pavlidis has scored league goals in double figures every year since 2019. After moving from AZ Alkmaar to Benfica, he scored 19 league goals. He made news with a double against England in Greece’s stunning 2-1 upset at Wembley. He also scored a hat-trick against Barcelona in the UCL as well. This shows he can perform at the big games.

That said, that game showed us all that he can deliver in the limelight. Amorim is looking to make some changes in the forward areas this summer. This comes after a season where current signings Hojlund and Zirkzee didn’t cut it.

Even if Sesko were to arrive, Pavlidis could still be signed to add some options to the squad. He is a typical number nine and composed when the opportunity strikes. If Man Utd want goals and hunger, Pavlidis brings both.

With a few weeks left in the window, don’t rule out a surprise Old Trafford arrival before deadline day.
